Hearing instrument specialists (HIS) engage in the practice of fitting and dispensing of hearing instruments. In particular, they measure human hearing to determine hearing loss via audiometric testing for the purpose of making selections, adaptations, repairs, or the sale of hearing instruments. The North Dakota State Board of Examiners on Hearing Instrument Specialists (NDSBE-HIS) are responsible for licensing HIS in the state of North Dakota.
